The Pont du Diable (Devil’s Bridge) is a 13th century bridge spanning the Mare River, about 15 mins walk 1km to the north of the village. From the top of its double arched construction, it has dramatic views down into the gorge and river below. Deep pools of slow moving water make this a favourite place with the locals for swimming/cooling off in the height of the summer well as offering good trout fishing. Lamalou-les-Bains also has an outdoor municipal pool suitable for kids.
The house has a couple of detailed Ordnance Survey maps and leaflets detailing the range of walks and hikes in the area. Decent walking shoes are recommended as some of the trails can be over quite rough terrain (a compass might also be useful in conjuction with the maps). There are some amazing walks within 25mins of the house, especially the dramatic Gorge D’Heric, Caroux and Orb valley route down to Roquebrun.
A new cycle trail running from Herepian to Olargue is now open (approximate distance one way 40km). Built on an old disused railway line, this track provides a road traffic free route along the very scenic Orb valley. Stop off for food and drink supplies at the various towns along the way or take a packed lunch. Cycle hire is available in Bédarieux only 5mins from Herepian.
The tourist offices in Bédarieux and Lamalou-les-Bains can provide detailed information about a range of activities in the immediate area including: Rock Climbing, Canoeing, Horse Riding, Fishing, Swimming, Golf, Birdwatching, Local Markets and Fetes.
