Hérépian, (5 minutes drive) is the next nearest town to Villemagne and has a modest range of shops, bars, boulanger, tabac, post office etc. 2km outside Hérépian on the road to Bédarieux is a large Intermarché Supermarket located at Camp Esprit, Route de Bédarieux.

This store will have pretty much everything you will need including a petrol station on the other side of the roundabout. Trolleys take a 1euro coin. The Intermarché doesn’t use disposable plastic bags anymore so either take your own bag - there are plenty in the kitchen next to the fridge, or buy one of their re-usuable ones in-store.

Opening hours are:
MON - SAT - 0900h - 2000h
SUNDAY morning only 0800h - 1200h

Directly next door to the Intermarché is SICA du Caroux, a smaller independent food store selling a good range of locally produced fruit, veg and speciality artisan products as well as a decent selection of wines from vineyards in the immediate area.

Opening hours are:
MON - SAT 0900h - 1230h and from 1500h - 1930h
There is also a DIY store (Bricomarché) and McDonalds directly opposite the supermarket.

Bédarieux is a larger town still 10mins drive from Hérépian and has a wider range of shops, cafes and a hospital mostly all located on the other side of the River Orb which runs through the town.

If you're not in the mood to drive, Villemagne boasts the single starred Michelin restaurant “Restaurant Auberge de L’Abbaye” which is only 5 mins walk from the house down to the village, crossing over the river via an arched iron footbridge. Being part of the Abbaye, the vaulted stone interior makes for a truly memorable dining experience. Probably worth booking in advance.

Take the spare torch with you to illuminate your walk back after your meal at the restaurant as street lighting only covers the village streets and not the route up to the house.

There is also a good restaurant on the Place in the centre of Hérépian,

“L’ Ochre Rouge” only 10 mins drive away. Friendly service, great food, with occassionally the option to eat outside in the summer on the rear terrace in the back garden.

In Bédariuex, ‘La Forge” is also good and within a 15 min drive of the house. Great for summer dining outdoors under a dense canopy of plane trees and tea lights on the table.
